<span id="goog_42140457"></span>Sushi Salad</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I got this idea from the time I wanted to make sushi, because sushi is my favorite food. My dad and I couldn't figure out how to roll the sushi even though we had the right thing to make a sushi roll. I gave up on making it that way, but still wanted sushi. Instead of rolling the seaweed, we crumbled it up and tore it to look like lettuce. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: center;"><br /></span></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The main ingredients</td></tr>

<div style="text-align: center;">
For sushi, of course I had to use rice and seaweed, but for the inside I thought I'd do something where you could choose different combinations. Carrots, avocado and cucumber are vegetables I like and taste good in sushi. For the toppings, I got ginger, wasabi and two kinds of sesame seeds: black bamboo-smoked and plum. </div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Christmas Candy Pizza</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Once I went on Club Penguin and I saw a game called "Pizza Patron 5000." There was a lever you can click to switch it to "candy mode" but they called it "cookie mode." I thought it was more like candy pizza and would make a good idea for my blog. <br />
<br />
I thought that a candy pizza should have a different crust, different sauce and different toppings. I made a picture that shows what I thought it would turn out to look like. Some early topping ideas I had were jelly beans for peppers (red & green), and coconut for cheese. The colors of the toppings reminded me of Christmas, so we made this a holiday recipe. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpx9Jj7OawidycME_9TfKVuxBMjVFwYBr3i6SRrQ8-yEEzknVoJVrpjBysoNJHuPwidH-t2MPJfeAZtd20ItKLYnk9dFshj3zWU3z3O2I-R6D5-6HFkM7O_OIA3jxzjR9vWrxlSjx0ESyz/s1600/IMG_2083.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpx9Jj7OawidycME_9TfKVuxBMjVFwYBr3i6SRrQ8-yEEzknVoJVrpjBysoNJHuPwidH-t2MPJfeAZtd20ItKLYnk9dFshj3zWU3z3O2I-R6D5-6HFkM7O_OIA3jxzjR9vWrxlSjx0ESyz/s320/IMG_2083.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
For the crust of my candy pizza, I didn't think it should be like a regular pizza crust. I wanted to use a pastry crust, because pastries normally have strawberry or chocolate icing on them, and sometimes candies.<br />
<br />
I used a Pate a Choux recipe from my Daddy's chef cookbook. This is the crust for eclairs, which are made in France a lot. I chose this because I really like French things.<br />
<br />
The recipe in the book said it makes 6 lbs, 8 oz:<br />
<br />
Ingredients needed:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi92mEkt0kXzW96zlQioTtbcNHlIv_MpED3SH_pghFN1Hb-GA3v-1lD0W-KSfxXGN7E2MlI83LpZG4leTItFeuGnZ5JKcvpCjWMJ21fbqBjYObYDmi2V73spR3XHi131N8kAU9-iZOY-3r2/s1600/IMG_2081.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi92mEkt0kXzW96zlQioTtbcNHlIv_MpED3SH_pghFN1Hb-GA3v-1lD0W-KSfxXGN7E2MlI83LpZG4leTItFeuGnZ5JKcvpCjWMJ21fbqBjYObYDmi2V73spR3XHi131N8kAU9-iZOY-3r2/s320/IMG_2081.JPG" style="cursor: move;" width="320" /></a></div>
<ul>
<li>Milk: 16 oz</li>
<li>Water: 16 oz</li>
<li>Bread flour: 1 lb & 8 oz</li>
<li>Salt: 1 & 1/2 tsp</li>
<li>Sugar: 1 & 1/2 tsp</li>
<li>Butter: 1 lb</li>
<li>Eggs: 2 lb & 4 oz</li>
</ul>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I didn't make the whole recipe because it would have been way more than we needed. I only wanted to make a few candy pizzas, so my dad helped me divide the amount of each ingredient by three, so we made one third of the recipe (1/3). Daddy taught me about pounds, ounces, teaspoons and cups and things to measure in. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
To make the recipe, you should meet with your mom or dad and work out the numbers to make the recipe smaller so you don't have a whoooole lot of candy pizzas or one ginormous pizza.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
These are the instructions from the recipe book:<br />
<br /><span style="font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;"></span>
<span style="font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;">
1. Bring the milk, water, butter, sugar, and salt to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly. Remove from the heat, add the flour all at once, and stir vigorously to combine. Return the pan to medium heat and cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture pulls away from the sides of the pan, about 3 minutes. </span><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I love cherries, and my sister loves chocolate and honey, so I thought we'd combine the three things. One year, my grandpa got chocolate covered cherries in his stocking; they tasted really good! I thought honey would taste better than the liquid inside, so I thought I'd make this myself. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
To make the recipe, you'll need chocolate chips, honey and Maraschino cherries. We used semi-sweet chocolate chips, which my dad suggested would work a little better than milk chocolate. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
First, we got a saucepan and filled it with water, and placed another saucepan on top to make a double-boiler. There should be a parent there to make sure you don't get hurt. I lit the burner myself while my dad was watching. </div>

I had the idea awhile ago to make little popsicles from cherries and grape juice. I thought the stems could be like a popsicle stick and you could eat them by the stem, but the stems weren't strong enough. The stems came off or it would fall over when you held it by the stem upside down. </div>

We strained the cherry juice out of the jar, and we're going to use it to make snow cones, but that's for another recipe...</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
For this recipe, you need:</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<ul>
<li>Grape juice</li>
<li>Cherries (Maraschino cherries)</li>
<li>Almond extract</li>
</ul>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Our mold is a flower mold, which we got from Ikea (I think), but you can use any type of mold. (An ice cube tray is a mold and works too!)</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Since we have a flower mold, we put cherries in the middle to look like the middle of a daisy. </div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I chose grape juice for the petals. Cherries and almonds taste good together, so I decided to add a few drops of almond extract to the grape juice. (Daddy says it's because of "<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benzaldehyde">benzaldehyde</a>," a chemical that's in both of them.) </div>

You take it to where you need it, squeeze it again and it goes down. :) We used a pipette, because if you poured it, it could overflow. Using a pipette, you know how much you're putting in so it doesn't overflow. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
We added the almond extract to the grape juice and stirred it. We used a big pipette for the grape juice, because we needed more than a small one could hold, and if we poured the grape juice from the bottle, it would've made a big mess! </div>

The first time I had macaroni and cheese pizza was in Madison, Wisconsin. My friends' parents took me out to a restaurant and they got mac & cheese pizza. At first it didn't sound very good, but I tried some and it was delicious!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
To make it, you would need macaroni and cheese and pizza crust, but we also made a separate sauce to use instead of tomato sauce and added more cheese on top.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We opened the can of pizza crust and spread it out to make it wider. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi47vuuSv5mTJLvUgx2LF8403_9W7TOfiFNGrM6GD_hmYAF5lQWgNwdkI4JimN254NPoNy3ZavSwVkem2FpAPIQSqDjUpd9483LlI4bCoa3TjYd-9wVQIlTa-DmXEQKO6-JOu-NuKNYg41z/s1600/IMG_0733.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; display: inline !important; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi47vuuSv5mTJLvUgx2LF8403_9W7TOfiFNGrM6GD_hmYAF5lQWgNwdkI4JimN254NPoNy3ZavSwVkem2FpAPIQSqDjUpd9483LlI4bCoa3TjYd-9wVQIlTa-DmXEQKO6-JOu-NuKNYg41z/s320/IMG_0733.jpg" width="239" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
To make the sauce, first we heated flour and butter in a pan. This is called roux (it looks like "rocks," but it sounds like "roo"). We had to stir it with a spoon to make sure the flour mixed with the butter. We made roux because it will make a thick sauce when we add milk to it. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We added milk until it was the right thickness, and to make it taste better, we added garlic powder and basil.</div>
<br />

You could use peppermints too, since candy canes aren't always in season. I looked in our pantry and I saw the prunes that my Dad got from Sunsweet, which is where he works, so I decided to use that for my sticky fruit. <br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimfthQtVsbQejaaaASm9U-cyL5j6uPD8o1hof0wlYW3kA5_W75uTMv7c2VQlaeULU0c-bmYELVIpftLsqjkxOdXcIPwPPqh8Rf6CRVAKr2BaPfobsVHmUOWHWPPQ39hTwojXSiYIQcRA2B/s1600/IMG_0286.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimfthQtVsbQejaaaASm9U-cyL5j6uPD8o1hof0wlYW3kA5_W75uTMv7c2VQlaeULU0c-bmYELVIpftLsqjkxOdXcIPwPPqh8Rf6CRVAKr2BaPfobsVHmUOWHWPPQ39hTwojXSiYIQcRA2B/s320/IMG_0286.jpg" width="220" /></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: black;"></span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then we crushed up the candy canes with a "mortar and pestle." (That's a strange name... I thought it was a "pill crusher" because that's what a friend of ours used to crush up pills, but my Dad told me the real name.) </div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I thought we could add pink peppercorns, because I really like them in my Dad's gelato. I thought they would taste good in this recipe.</div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
We used the mortar and pestle to crush up the pink peppercorns too.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
I like cinnamon, so I thought we should use it in the recipe too. I liked the smell of cloves and wanted to try that also. But now there were too many ingredients to combine all together. We decided to make a bunch of different cones with different combinations. We put all the ingredients in glass bowls so we could tell them apart.<br />

We cooked the chocolate in a double boiler because we needed to melt the chocolate. A double boiler is to pots that go on top of each other. Water goes in the bottom and chocolate goes in the top. We did this so it wouldn't burn. (When my Dad melted chocolate to make candy for a party, he cooked some without water in the bottom and it burned. You could tell because it was lumpy.)</div>

<br />
We got our sugar cones ready. (Notice the fairy book in the background. It's my recipe book, where I write down all of my ideas.) <br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When the chocolate was melted, we put it in the bowls and stirred it together.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCGynPkJgr-KsbP3A_ydy3LYaf50qKf1-sGFHugm2XkajHaiD9_PGjUKU2Lss-Yk3HjCmsCRsJ8pzC2WcrgtHbsxuASoa_6QHzLhffk2WKXO3IznqBWtbURa-jFVuTJ7mPCZOzt_EBD03z/s1600/IMG_0289.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCGynPkJgr-KsbP3A_ydy3LYaf50qKf1-sGFHugm2XkajHaiD9_PGjUKU2Lss-Yk3HjCmsCRsJ8pzC2WcrgtHbsxuASoa_6QHzLhffk2WKXO3IznqBWtbURa-jFVuTJ7mPCZOzt_EBD03z/s320/IMG_0289.jpg" width="239" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then we used a spatula to fill the cones, and put it in the fridge to cool. <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhP4-zYiI_5il9erF_2wmVTGB-7DxhFlF-jG90H7Mhs0sp-zEBOT-y6Gz68L8-ofjxbeKNH0fWCv-7TXi821nH1snDvXNYjA0GXAY3rpmlmL73bhzq5FJjoVl4w0G7CdTa5qQnIEXp9100a/s1600/IMG_0290.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhP4-zYiI_5il9erF_2wmVTGB-7DxhFlF-jG90H7Mhs0sp-zEBOT-y6Gz68L8-ofjxbeKNH0fWCv-7TXi821nH1snDvXNYjA0GXAY3rpmlmL73bhzq5FJjoVl4w0G7CdTa5qQnIEXp9100a/s320/IMG_0290.jpg" width="239" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
All of the cones had prunes and chocolate. Half of them had candy canes. We tried a few different spices: cinnamon, cloves and pink peppercorns. (We also tried adding pomelo zest, but my Dad and I both didn't like it at all. It was too bitter!) <br />
<br />
We liked ones with peppermint the best, especially ones that also had pink peppercorns or cinnamon. Prunes were a good choice for the fruit because they were sticky but not too juicy. They tasted good with the chocolate.<br />
<br />
You can eat them by themselves or add ice cream on top! </div>Chef Gracehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02902516517769680325noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-500321971687366225.post-41216227174812122172012-02-09T20:45:00.000-08:002012-03-06T20:28:40.717-08:00My first blog recipe: fruit tart with gingerbread-candy cane crust<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

This is my first recipe that I made for the blog. Since my Dad does a lot of recipes, I thought I should come up with some of my own. <br />
<br />
First, I wanted to combine chocolate, blueberries, raspberries and crushed-up ginger snaps to make a dessert soup. But then just today I thought of using candy canes instead of the chocolate. <br />
<br />
When my dad got home, he suggested that we did a tart, because he thought it would be more successful. <br />
<br />
To make the tart, I added one candy cane and a few handfuls of ginger snaps to the food processor and we processed it until it was all mushed up. Then we melted 3-4 tablespoons of butter in the microwave and slowly poured it in while it was mixing. (We added butter so it would all stick together.) Then I put it in little bowls and we used a big spoon to push it along the sides. <br />
<br />
My dad cut up oranges, kiwis and strawberries into little bits. I mixed them up and put them in the bowls with the crust. I wanted to add marshmallows, but we didn't have small ones and my dad said the big ones probably wouldn't work. So instead, we added little toffee bits. <br />
<br />
We thought it was delicious. Tomorrow I'm going to give it to my teacher. I hope you and my teacher like it!<br />
